Side-point - I'd even put an asterisk on OpenAI's innovation. a) Initial release was an amalgamation of prior research (valid) b) Subsequent models have for the most part been upgrades + optimizations (new iphone models aren't innovations), and c) their products are essentially emergent behaviors of a technology that is already a commodity (or ideas taken from the wider ecosystem). Not to say they aren't great engineers!
By constantly being in the headlines, they've given competitors lots of room to catch up.

While majority of people will be fine with "ai-ligh"t on their phones, enthusiasts can just invest 3k EUR/USD one time and run their own private, personalized, heavy and maybe most importantly uncensured AI using open source models.

Most ChatGPT sessions I have these days include ChatGPT reminding me or referencing something that I only shared with it days or weeks earlier in previous chats. So far it does increase quality of the chats, although not valuable enough (yet) to prevent me from using a different model.
You can export chats (for now), a competitor could add the ability to import chats. It's just that so far OpenAI is the only one focusing on the consumer market (both Anthropic & Google seem to be more enterprise focused)
Eh, I think it's actually something subtly different. I think OpenAI does believe that a moat exists and actually that they're on the losing end of it. They seem to have realized that Google is going to (arguably already has) eaten their lunch because of their privileged internet content scraper. Google can/has amassed more data than OpenAI could ever hope to because they provide reciprocal value to the sites they index, so much value that Googlebot gets let through captchas and paywalls. I think this is OpenAI trying to get some momentum that convinces site owners to not just up and block them.
Because the first thing you have to do to surface your products on ChatGPT is opt your site into the scraper.
I have a hard time believing that the differentiating factor between the top models is data volume. Sure, Google has all of the internet mirrored internally, but the vendor models are seeing unfathomably large collections. Clever engineering is doing more to getting better performance. I doubt DeepSeek had better English datasets than OpenAI or Google.
I'm seeing a lot of negativity here so I'll take the positive view.
I regularly use ChatGPT for product advice. The other day I was replacing a wireless router, and I needed a WiFi 6 vs 6n vs 7 vs mesh vs not-mesh breakdown. It was great to have the AI explain all that, and it would recommend products, but there were no pictures, and no links, and definitely no price comparisons.
So I had to copy and paste product names from my GPT chat app into google, and then click around a bit, and repeat across 3 or 4 products. And then remember all that. I have no objections with ChatGPT showing me products I've asked about, and doing a price compare, and linking me. And I don't even have a problem with them wrapping those links in affiliate links if they want to.
As long as the suggestions they give aren't based on who pays them the most money then I think it's a value add.

Correction: they're not their ads, but they're generating recommendations based on scraped web content which will inevitably be polluted with affiliate spam, astroturfing and other black hat marketing bullshit. They've actually found a way to run ads and not even get paid for it.
Case in point, I just asked ChatGPT for the best noise cancelling headphones under $200 (their example from the OP) and it cited multiple blatantly LLM generated affiliate blogspam sites. Doesn't really inspire confidence.
They could, but not necessarily. I think what OpenAI is getting is cooperation - that is, their search engine isn’t blocked. No money needs to change hands.
My guess is that once they're entrenched firmly enough, OpenAI will ask for money. First sell the free thing then once people rely on it enough, start charging.
This seems like a step towards some sort of basic ad supported model. At the end of the day that's the only way they'll be able to survive long term against the money printing machine that is Google. Do I love the idea? No. But it's hard to argue anyone loses when the search space becomes more competitive.
Open AI cannot really succeed unless they build their own hardware. Google has spent a decade developing their own TPUs. You need both lower cost hardware and superior software/algorithms to make a good solution.

Recent events [1] should make it clear that the "golden age" of commercial LLMs is over, and that companies have moved to the advertising + engagement farming phase of the technology now. Which is sad to see since I don't get the impression limits have been reached on the core technology yet, but I suppose you can't fund things with high benchmark scores.
That could happen. But the model - at least in theory hasn't changed from traditional search.
There's a customer. They have a need. The go to the tool (i.e., search or AI) looking for answers. Note: They are a customer of the tool. That is, the tool, in order to retain the customer wants to keep that customer happy.
In any case, knowing that's the relationship, the tool is very mindful of any suggestions. It doesn't want to send its customer to some BS site, have its customer get pissed off and then next time use a different tool. The tool could do pay-to-play but that endangers the relationship with the customer.
Ultimately the tools' number #1 question is: "Can I trust this site I'm going to suggest with my customer?" and "If I suggest this site to my customer will it help or hurt my relationship with my customer?"

It already exists. You can hire companies to implant your brand into certain queries in all of the big chatbots.
