It seems to me like you missed the point of his letter to Carmack entirely. He's saying it doesn't have to be the greatest tool for the job, he's saying it's a good intro for would-be programmers and dabblers.

And don't give me that "when you were born" line. It's built to hinder fresh, new ideas and perspectives.

Perhaps. But we should be able to do better. Pygame, for example -- The example I found[1] looks quite nice and easy to use:

Pygame can be a pain to install sometimes. Things that package dependencies into a single binary (like Love2D) are easier to setup, but often lack the out-of-the-box interactivity that JavaScript tools provide.


Pygame is effectively just SDL.

If you are going to depend on OpenGL anyway, Pyglet is even nicer for newbies


Javascript is the new BASIC then? If so, it is better.
