I tried upgrading the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module but it wouldn't grab the latest drivers so I had to stick to the old Bluetooth that barely reaches across the room.

You haven't worked a lot with laptops then. Many have a whitelist for Wi-Fi cards and will refuse to boot with anything else in the slot.
