Ugh why is a dating article near the top of HN? Go to reddit for that nonsense.

the impact of technology on relationships is an important thing to understand and discuss. if you don't like it, don't read it

I would have liked an article on this topic to have more of a tech focus or population level perspective. This article is a short gender biased anecdata piece that is not at all insightful in my opinion. Expanding on the last point about how the algorithm is affecting perspective and other factors would be better.

This is your third comment in this thread that mentions "gender biased". It's an article in the "Lifestyle" category of a news website, it's not a scientific study with balanced sample set.

Yeah agreed. Like it or not this is how most people connect and analyzing tech of connections is necessary.

Maybe you can answer this. What amount of the CP pictures are actual CP? Like are teens posting selfies of themselves in swimsuits or revealing clothes being submitted? People with their kids in the bathtub/pool? Are most of these pictures real give you nightmares CP?

Its seems insane to me that anyone would knowingly upload CP to a forensics site on purpose. Much less several times a day.

OK, I'll forfit 100% of my rights to eradicate CP from my country. Then lets say these measures are effective and CP is removed in all but name from the country. Now what do we do with the thousands of people and billions or of dollars that is being funneled into the effort? Well history shows us this answer. None of those people or authorizes are suddenly going to say well that's a wrap. Lay us off and take the budget to a more meaningful use. Nope, instead they double down and start looking for other "infringements" to justify their funding and their jobs. Ever increasing in the pettiness of the trespass until powerful sociopath realizes they can now repurpose this agency an their resources for their own power gain to remove opponents and silence opposition.

Perhaps even worse. They move on to some ML based detection that uploads suspected CP that is not in the database. Most people have no idea how bad a false accusation can destroy their lives. Even if you are 100% innocent there is already a formal government case against you. At the very least you will be compelled to hire a very expensive attorney to handle the matter for you. After all you cant risk a budget attorney with a huge caseload to handle this potential life sentence case. Not to mention that during this time you will possible be locked out of accounts, finances, put on leave from employment, banned from hiring, banned from assistance programs. Perhaps even posted in the media as a sex offender.

I really don't get this are you in some super poor country? No offense intended. I'm an IT manager of a mediocre real estate company and I have a decked out home office with all the new toys and with a mini data center that could power a medium size office. In all probably totaling in the mid 5 figures. All company paid and I doubt they remember I exist most days. Where are these tech first companies that barely allow a CTO to scrape by with no resources?

High pay does not imply that you live in a large house with ample space for an office even if you can afford it. Someone living in a $1M+ condo in an urban high-rise for the lifestyle is unlikely to have space for an office if they did not plan on needing one when they bought it. Most people aren't in the habit of spending lots of money on things they don't plan on using. Even if you wanted to move to a larger house since COVID means you now need an office, in many regions there is no housing available to buy.

I don't have a home office either and no one would confuse me with being poor. Until COVID, I had no use for one.

If you're in a high COL area, then the constraint is usually an extra room away from your family, not the equipment. Not always an option to buy or rent a place with another room once you start working from home. My company sure isn't paying an extra $500-1,000 per month to cover rent/mortgage.

Remember: "CTO" sometimes means "I am the technical founder of a 3 person company"

Not to say it applies to the OP, but there are "CTOs" (poorly compensated, ramen startup engineer with a fancy title) then there are CTOs (well compensated--cash and equity, and C-Suite or C-Suite adjacent individuals at a well-capitalized real business)

Between the two extremes mentioned there is the engine of the global economy. That's where we are.

Not the GP, but my guess is probably Canada?

That is actually a really cool idea. Probably a lot more work than it sounds like.

In other news 60% of people don't pay attention to anything other than what is parroted to them by other "people"

Being good is hard. Being big is easy.

Cool. That said this guy is basically describing a notebook. No computer necessary. If his goal was a 1000 year computer that would be something.

Unless every person on earth wants to become a PHD in CS this is a dead end. How do you fix this computer otherwise, hire someone? Yeah its called the market and it sells $150 replacement computers when yours dies. Exactly 1 person on earth would use this and its the author.

It always bothers me a bit when tech people get so wrapped up in a rabbit hole of a pointless obsession. His skills/time could be used much better elsewhere.

> a rabbit hole of a pointless obsession

...like, a hobby? I don't see any evidence that this author has an unhealthy obsession. And, if the comments here are any indication: a lot of techies would be absolutely charmed to find unearth such a machine from a dusty box. I know I would!

Watching the incredible work of amateur retro-computing enthusiasts today, I have no doubt that whatever Steve Lord creates could find an enthusiastic operator a century from now.

I quit caffeine for a year and found it not to be worth it. I'm simply not a 9-5 type person so when I have to go in an office I need caffeine to function and I function much better.

Epstein was possibly the most high profile case of child sex trafficking linked to people in power in all of history. Instead of being treated as such every procedure, protocol, and standard were botched, disregarded, "glitched", ignored, ect. You are never gonna get a video of Clinton, ect confessing to buying child prostitutes from Epstine.

I don't know. I find it more likely that people are just incompetent. The world is not nearly as finely run as conspiracy theorists like to think it is. Epstein was never going to allow himself to rot away in jail, so it's zero surprise that he committed suicide. He's never had to deal with the consequences of his actions, why would he start then?

Destroying the evidence so blatantly was incompetent. A competent group of conspirators that has the resources to blackmail US Presidents would have done things much more smoothly, including an entirely realistic looking video of Epstein killing himself.

Conspiracy theory conversations are fascinating to me. One the one side you have conspiracy theorists who have a rather loose practice of epistemology, relying heavily on heuristic intuition and a few "facts" in the formation of their beliefs. And then you have their detractors who seem to consider themselves intellectually superior, yet use essentially the same reasoning methodology (as it relates specifically to conspiracy theories).

Right, but he was kept on suicide watch, given paper clothes and sheets, and placed in a special jail cell specifically designed to prevent suicide, as they are currently doing with Ghislaine Maxwell: https://nypost.com/2020/07/09/feds-take-ghislaine-maxwells-s...
