There's more but I won't flood you. The point I'm trying to make is that things _so far_ are okay, but will get increasingly dicey if people don't have access to food and the necessities for living.
I am sorry to disappoint you but no, things are not starting to get dicey in Italy, at least not yet.
I am italian and value that Guardian report as I value one written in "Novella 2000". Those reported are single episodes and UK journalism is trying to build a case out of nothing as happened other times in the past.
P.S: I live in Rome and here people are still singing.
P.P.S: "Novella 2000" is the unquestionable italian king of trash gossip magazines.
I moved abroad in 2018 to a non-english speaking country and just about everyone I met had Duolingo on their phone. You'd be surprised at how many would cough up for a Premium membership just to keep their streak from breaking and making the cute green owl cry.
That said, apparently their biggest market is actually people trying to learn English, which... checks out. In our modern times, english is the lingua franca. There's a bottomless pit of people who want or need to learn it.
It's weird, because it's not very good at understanding the need of the users. If you are Chinese and want to learn English, you have to show the contrast between the grammar-points from a Chinese perspective in an meaningful way.
It really feels like: how can I, as an english developer, teach language? Instead of: -How can I, as an elite teacher, create an app to teach language?
Now that I think about it... is there any teachers with SF-developer-salary? Is there any language-teachers that talk about being the 10x teacher?
Oh my god, I had a wool duvet for a while and it was seriously the best. The wool is a natural fiber which allows the humidity to escape, leaving you warm but not sticky.
Be careful with the outer shell of these, though – no use getting a wool duvet with a polyester outer shell (or polyester duvet cover!)
> I suspect there is a lot of cognitive dissonance involved.
This for sure. I had multiple friends work for Crispin Porter & Bogusky in the early 2010s. They're the main ad agency for companies like Burger King and Dominos. Great opportunity for them to begin their careers as designers, but at some point, all of them had to learn how to swallow selling diabetes to kids.
Maybe it's more of a philosophical internal vs external locus of control thing, but I don't find this one similar to tobacco. It's easy to use Dominos and Burger King "responsibly". I don't find anything unethical about their business and wouldn't feel bad working for them.
Tobacco I'm less sure about, since I don't really know of anyone who uses it "responsibly".
I don't see that as the same at all. They're providing a necessary service. People need to eat, they don't need to gamble or smoke.
Burgers and Pizza aren't the healthiest food in the world, but they're not the worst either. A typical burger consists of bread, meat and salad. There's nothing inherently wrong with any of those things.
Train service is pretty high up in the Maslow's hierarchy of social needs is the thing. It really is a nice extra if a region can provide it for its people – but it usually doesn't come before reasonable health care across the board.
... engineers who will still be there, just less white and western than you're used to.
There will still be a next generation if Millenials and post-Millenials in developed economies decide to not have children due to environmental concerns, just like there was a next generation after the baby boomer women took to their careers with as much dedication as men.
There will be a next generation. End of story. But its superstar engineers won't be white.
Similar situation to Berlin after the fall of the wall.
What happened here was that new college grads, artists, punks, and people generally looking for a cheap place to live moved into unrenovated apartments...
And now it's a tech hub and haven of cheap living ;)
I think the difference is in branding/positioning, and therefore the mental state of the person engaging with the site and creating content.
Porn = male gaze-y[1], intentionally and overtly about sexual gratification, less about exploration
A free-wheeling blog site = a place open to the exploration of a number of different aspects of identity, of which sexuality is one of them.
In short: If Pornhub were to create a tumblr clone, they'd inherently be enticing people to _produce porn_ rather than producing content which might happen to be somewhat pornographic. There's a huge mental barrier there for lots of people, even if they happen to enjoy viewing porn or producing sexually explicit imagery.
[1] Yes I know women watch porn, the default assumption of porn viewership is still a cis male audience
Keyword being "so far". In Italy, where people have been out of work for months, things are starting to get dicey. Here are some links:
