Great article! Interesting to see they were still selling the SMS for 10% of the price of the Saturn at the same time.

It has the best integration with Visual Studio, and it is incredible value for money on the $10/mo plan. I used it for all my legacy WinForms app work.

PG always loved playing with tech. He dropped a decent chunk in the late 90s, early 2000s to build one of the first real music streaming platforms. I worked for him for a while. I put forth the idea of releasing his Up album online in 5.1 surround, and he was happy to do it, and it was the first. (I only did this because I'd just installed a 5.1 system in my car and wanted more content for it)

The newest February Google Deep Think update is excellent at writing 16-bit x86 CGA code. It very quickly put together a complete 3D software renderer in assembler. I'm trying to replace the rendering functions of the original 8086 Elite PC since there have been significant improvements in how to write video RAM since it came out.

I'll have to try Opus 4.6 now.

Yes, Earth could be in a Dark Breakfast Local Minimum. Potentially there are worlds out there where all breakfasts are Dark and their scientists cannot even comprehend the idea of an Egg Singularity.

Especially if you can time your visit to Florida with a launch. Seeing the Shuttle launch in real life made me realize what a poor medium television is to actually show you reality.

(I don't know what the current policies are but you used to be able to apply in advance for VIP tickets, or buy them on the secondary market, which gives you much closer viewing of the launch)

Elon Musk's net worth now (sadly) near a trillion dollars... :/

He is spending it effectively to colonize the sky. That makes him the MVP of the whole biosphere.

But what if new jobs aren't created? I don't think it's an absolute given that because new jobs came after the invention of the loom and the tractor that there will always be new jobs. What if AI if a totally different beast altogether?

Then there will be no one to buy the robots :)

It's quite possible that the rich will essentially form a new economy.

They build the robots to build the factories, run the mines, build the solar farms, run the research labs, repair the robots, etc. They sell to and buy from each other.

What if we just run out of new jobs?

Areas of the economy suffered this time and time again. Even if there are new jobs, even if those new jobs are better paid and better conditions than the ones they replace, how does that help the 55 year old coal miner who has seen his industry vanish. Can he realistically retrain?

It’s not unprecedented however the scale and speed that it will come at is. Things like the spinning jenny came along and replaced spinners, but weavers stayed for another generation.

Selfishly though I am more concerned about losing my job and industry than I was concerned about others suffering from the 80s, or during the pivot to the intenet. To quote Dr McCoy

> We're all sorry for the other guy when he loses his job to a machine. When it comes to your job, that's different. And it always will be different.

Realistically, he can retrain, although he is unlikely to be a good culture fit. /s
