Very glad to see EFF put this out there. We’re just some of the people who saw the problem coming before others. Now others are catching up.

Also, had this username since the Apple CSAM debacle and we all see how that went.

Stay positive!

Glad to see this is being brought up.

It’s obnoxious how many companies are throwing recycled plastics into consumer goods (watch bands, hats, phone cases, some clothes even) with no regard to health consequences.

I’m all about being better for the environment but I also don't want to be wearing plastic.

So much of this looks like green washing to me. Reminds me of those reusable coffee cups from bamboo or whatever. That ended up containing all the same chemicals...

In the years since, manufacturing problems have emerged[1] not only in the 737 but at other factories where Boeing makes its 787 Dreamliner, a U.S. military refueling tanker and Air Force One replacement jets[2], as well as at some of its key suppliers.

A favorite of mine as well. I too was hoping for more of an appearance. I wondered if Feynman’s moment was during the first test scene where there is a spectator/scientist sitting in a car with Teller sitting in a lawn chair in the foreground. Feynman says in one of his books he noticed the car windows should block the UV radiation.

Ah, yes, that is it. So he gets a few more seconds in the movie than I thought :)

[An army man is handing out welders glass to the observers. Feynman is in a car, Teller is next to him in a deckchair rubbing sun cream into his skin]

TELLER [to the army man while rubbing his hands]: On the leg, please

ARMY MAN: Feynman

FEYNMAN: No. The glass [knocks on car windshield] stops the UV

TELLER: And what stops the glass?

Account is not the same as your device

Apple isn't scanning the contents of your device. They are discussing scanning content you upload to iCloud Photos.

So, yes. It's the same.

"Before an image is stored in iCloud Photos, the following on-device matching process is performed for that image against the blinded hash table database."

https://www.apple.com/child-safety/pdf/CSAM_Detection_Techni...

Apple disagrees with you.

Did you just post a quote proving that only images uploaded to iCloud Photos are scanned while claiming that all images on the device are scanned?

Android != Google

It’s not the same scanning. Apple’s scanning is on device while Google and others scan for CSAM in their respective clouds.

And why does that matter? Apple scans images that are uploaded to iCloud. Google scans photos that are uploaded to Google Photos.

Exact same result.

It is not the same result. Scanning on your device using inaccurate methods is not the same thing as uploading your photos.

The method that Apple is describing is going to cause more harm than good. Look how faulty their methodology is - even they agree it needs to be fixed.

I have looked at it, carefully, and there really isn't any way for it to do harm. If you want to claim there is, I will want to hear the exact steps you are thinking of, and how they match the published details of the system.

Agree. If we had better privacy laws, this wouldn't be an issue.

Cops don't care about the privacy laws which already exist. (See: parallel construction.) If we had better privacy laws, they would just get sneakier.

Yup, and even so, it's up to the defendant to prove themselves innocent, which will take tens of thousands of dollars just to get to the point where a judge throws the case out.

Cops care deeply about what privacy laws exist. That still limits what data they can legitimately get access to. In this case they could of used a Stingray or equivalent but:

* They would not of known where to place it before the crime took place.

* Even if they somehow got the data about the location of the cyclist under the table they would have had no way to parallel construct anything.

Since there was no other evidence that would of been it.

This is not a new thing. The authorities can open and read your mail as much as they want using bamboo splints and/or the steam from a kettle. But because it is very illegal to do that it greatly reduces the abuse possible from such actions.

Privacy laws are a prerequisite and are essential.

Share your knowledge and experiences with those around you - I personally believe that STEM fields need to be better about a tenet found in medicine "...see one (procedure), do one, teach one..."

Make a local club, teach basics to those who don't understand computing, teach at your local college, develop software that understands we need more user friendly software in the scope of security and privacy.

Bless you.

The iPad is great for notes, reviewing articles, artistic stuff with the pencil.

For everything other than that, I have found it overhyped, overpriced, and severely limited in functionality.

If you’re interested, I would argue getting a cheaper iPad with the better pencil. Save yourself some money and potential buyers remorse.
