You mention crime in regards to safety within a city, but there is a study floating around Twitter that factors in traffic fatalities in suburban and rural areas, and the dangers of cars make suburbs and rural areas MORE dangerous that urban areas! Take a look at this article detailing urban vs rural deaths: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/people-in-rural-a...
A good financial advisor will recommend keeping 3-6 months of non-negotiable expenses saved, not revenue. 6 months of revenue would be a quite significant amount of savings for most people.
This article seems a little fearmongering. Autopay is great, and several credit card companies offer a variety of nice features to help reduce the likelihood of temporary cash flow management issues. Citi for example allows you to split your payment in 2, so if you are paid biweekly, you can arrange your payment dates to align with your paydays.
> have very little tax for people's primary residence
Homeowners already get crazy tax breaks that our society bears the cost of. This would just be an even bigger shift to funding government services on the backs of renters rather than homeowners, as any increase in taxes that "landlords" are assessed is passed on to renters.
A lot of human activities don't use that much energy in the grand scheme of things. Playing board games, walking around a neighborhood, going to concerts or shows at the theater, these are all things that use very little energy when compared to heavy manufacturing, transportation, and most agriculture. Since most humans will bear the costs of climate change as it begins to destroy our past investments, I think it's fairly reasonable to fix that damage based on how much carbon activities generate.
> now you have to pay more tax
I mean I buy a cheap stock and it's value goes up, why should I have to pay tax on that too!? The value of the land has gone up because it has more amenities and benefits as well. If you feel you are not benefiting from the increased investment around your land, then you should sell it so it can be put to better use.
> it was EPA mandates
Correction: it was the exemptions from EPA mandates that created the huge truck situation. The fix would be to remove the exemptions for "light trucks"
> you should sell it so it can be put to better use.
This is the key point! There is an opportunity cost for society from every piece of land we cannot use for something new. That's reflected by the value of the land. If the value to the owner is much lower than the value to someone else, we aren't using the land efficiently.
It's also unearned income. It's ideal to tax unearned income because you don't create negative incentive for desired activities. It's in essence a tax that comes at no cost to society.
There are some startups, but they seem to be very limited in their growth potential given the very cyclical nature of construction. I believe this hampers their access to VC and debt funding, so they don't make as big of a splash.
My city has a local construction startup that is trying to drop the cost of housing units by fabricating panels and rooms offsite and assembling at the construction site: https://www.modulehousing.com/
On mobile Firefox, the app captures the gesture to go back to the prior page, so I couldn't come back to here until I typed in the URL box to navigate to Hacker News
Thank you, I honestly having noticed the hijacking of the back button. I'd like to apologize to everyone for it. I'll fix it ASAP. Thanks for all the good feedback
Same thing on my mobile Firefox. I actually went back dozen times, thinking to myself "did I really make this many fuck cards?" before realizing what's happening.
If you're gonna hijack the back button for the purpose of your app, folks, at least make it eventually go to the previous page. Don't make it circular.

Sorry that my only comment is a criticism, I guess being a SW engineer turned me oversensitive to bugs/unexpected behavior. Like an allergy caused by overexposure, haha.

Or, in the spirit of the site itself... they can fuck the fuck off. Not sure if it's lazy or hostile but it ensures I won't visit again.
I try my best to not assume malice unless evident beyond reasonable doubt.
Far more evil comes from misunderstanding or just plain old ignorance (not in a deragoratory way - we all learn new things every day). So in practice, it's a useful heuristic.
Same here on desktop Safari. If there's one thing I can't stand is hijacking of the back button.
I'm not sure about Firefox but on other browsers you can hold the back button to see your history - then you can navigate back to HN (or wherever) from there.
I love Super Juice! If I'm going to have friends over for a get together or party, I'll make a batch (or multiple if I want more than 1 fruit) a few days ahead of time to increase the speed in which drinks can be made. The downside is that garnishes still generally tend to need peels, so I still need to have a couple real fruits hanging around.
For garnishes, unless expressing the oil of a citrus peel is essential to the aroma of your cocktail (like in a Negroni), my "hack" has been to dehydrate citrus wheels as garnish. You can get ~2-3 wheels out of the middle of every citrus fruit and use the rest for super juice. Plus, they look really cool.
