This is a line of thinking that just supposes we shouldn’t post things on the internet at all. Which, sure, is probably the right move if you’re that concerned about OPSEC, but just because ActivityPub has a flakier model doesn’t mean it isn’t being watched

Yep, here: https://atproto.com/guides/account-migration

There’s also tools that can help automate this: https://pdsmoover.com/

Not true, there are many independent relays (one went online today, in fact: https://bsky.app/profile/upcloud.com/post/3lzqkrrqap22n).

This also completely misunderstands the architecture. Things don't hinge on the relays at all and they don't act as routers.

Even if everyone is on bsky.social, that's still a huge improvement on the status quo. It's not like the web isn't decentralised just because lots of people are on AWS - you can move away at any moment, adversarially if necessary.

Looking forward to the future where an app just sort of silently backs up your PDS/keys on your device until the day you need it and everyone finds out they can log into whatever platform replaces the one that blew up like nothing happened.

It’s good at social-oriented apps - there’s obviously Bluesky, and many other smaller apps in the style of other platforms.

One of the most interesting projects is tangled.sh - a github-like using atproto for the social layer, which fits perfectly.

this is the only one really gunning for the “hub” part of github, very exciting stuff

also, it's nice that verifications are easily enumerable, unlike labels

On the previous screen, you can change your account provider

Yeah - technically the same button, but with a slightly more subtle treatment. People were getting confused by it and bouncing. IMO, since it's only really useful if you already know what you're doing and already have a PDS ready to go, there's no harm making the first-time experience smoother.

This is all totally going to change when OAuth rolls out, so hopefully we can find a better compromise then.

A lot of it comes down to revealed preferences: people genuinely do just engage a lot more with algorithmic ranking. However I'm coming to believe the best algorithm at any given time is contextual - what content do you want to see? How much content is out there, and how much of it is within reach of your existing following network? Currently if you want to engage with stuff in a different mode, you just have to jump apps entirely, I'm hopeful Bluesky is able to serve a broader set of needs by just letting you pick what algorithm you're using.
