> Kamala Harris's threat to tax unrealized gains just prior to the election is probably why we have Donald Trump in office today

It was not a good policy and was unpopular with many Democrats, but I think there were several other more major contributing factors to why as Trump won (ex. general displeasure with inflation post-COVID, high emphasis on the asylum crisis/trans issues, plus only having 4 months lead-up time after Biden's withdrawal).

Add to that the fact that there were no Democratic primaries.

Another factor was tech and crypto. The Biden administration was widely seen as hostile to crypto and DeFi, which turned off a lot of younger and online voters and created unexpected opposition to Harris.

There was also a perception of politicization in agencies that are supposed to be neutral. People pointed to things like EV summits excluding Tesla, or regulatory pressure and delays affecting SpaceX launches and Tesla investigations. Whether justified or not, the optics made it look selective and punitive.

Individually these aren't huge voting blocs, but at the margins they likely added to the broader dissatisfaction.

And what also didn't help was the perception that the Harris campaign operated in something of an ideological bubble. For example, reports that staff discouraged her from doing a Joe Rogan interview because they disliked him reinforced the idea of an echo chamber, which ties into your point about trans issues.

At least in the U.S., from my observations, it's mainly a right-wing phenomenon and borne from the same culture that brought us the likes of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Hal Turner. As a teenager, my friends and I would laugh at this stuff and assume by the time we were having kids, Fox News and similar right-wing, vaguely racist, puritanical media would be diminished to a point where it was hardly noticeable. We were clearly very wrong.

I'm surprised to see this is built on libSQL -- a while ago, I was told on the Turso Discord that libSQL was deprecated in favorite of the new `tursodatabase` packages. Is there a Bunny Database specific NPM package for the libSQL fork?

This reflects my experience. I also experienced very bad memory leaks when using libSQL for large write jobs. Haven't tried tursodatabase yet, but my impression by the confusing amount of packages in the Turso ecosystem is it's not ready for primetime yet.

There's a good CCK Philosophy video about AI Art that I think is pertinent here [1]. From my layman's observation, AI is forcing us to reflect on the kind of work we do, how it fulfills us, and maybe even exposing the danger of exclusively finding fulfillment from employment.

You hit the nail on the head, and it's very difficult to communicate this to someone who has only experienced the luxury of not having to worry about having a roof over their heads between jobs.

I honestly have trouble understanding the other side of it. I have always been working class. I have a good job now in tech now and could weather 6 months of job searching if I needed to, but if I lost my job today, I would absolutely take the first available job I could find, even if that is something "beneath" me like retail or hospitality. I don't think I could ever be convinced that it was safe to be unemployed for any length of time. Sure, I could take the time now, but what if I need that money later on for something that I don't have a choice about, like an illness, natural disaster, etc.?

It's just too risky to ever be unemployed in the United States unless you are already so wealthy that you don't need to work at all anyway.

Same, I'm still using Sublime with SublimeLSP, and it works for 95% of my use cases because I tend to rely on the terminal for everything else. Although I do hope to switch to Zed eventually because of it's built-in debugger and ability to select-copy text in popups (I can't believe Sublime still doesn't allow this in 2026) -- Zed still had some rough edges last time I tried it, and Sublime still seemed to perform better.

The focus on VS Code is a bit confusing. The author seems to have an issue with juniors relying IDEs as a crutch in general.

Might have just been nostalgia, but I've played video games since I was a child, and largely took a extended break from Nintendo titles when I became an almost-exclusive PC gamer in the late 2000s.

I finally played Mario Odyssey for the first time last year, and I instantly felt like a kid in 1997 again, and my mood was elevated with excitement for playing this game -- it was clear a ton of love was poured into the level design and game mechanics. It was the best gaming experience I've had in my adult life.

> I finally played Mario Odyssey

I have no words for how good that game is. It is both fresh and nostalgic at the same time. And the hat thing is done perfectly. Like, the more hats the bosses have the better they are, duh, of course.

Dark(er) side of the moon gets really challanging for adults too.

It would be so easy for Nintendo to just spam Mario games but they don't.

My experience has been the opposite. For both “hardcore” PC games and “simpler” games like Mario, as an adult it’s not only hard to find time but once I do, games feel like an exhausting chore. I go in anticipating relaxation but can’t get it. Sometimes even just getting to the menu screen brings this feeling of dread. I’m not sure how to go back to the feeling of being a kid.

Same, it feels like more work. In the old days you would punch the cartidrige in and get started. The controllers themselves had half a dozen buttons. Nowadays if I spend more than a few months without playing ill forget the commands, and I don't have the mental energy or time to spend relearning before being able to actually enjoy the game. I paused zelda for 2.5yrs and couldn't pick it up again. Just too much relearning

I think those games are not the problem. If you feel dread... I mean if you would felt boredom or be annoyed that you will be spending time in a useless activity... But dread? Maybe you should talk to some friend or the family?

Two drinks, or a toot of the zoot.

Y’know: if all else fails :)

Totally relate to this. The movement in Mario 64 still holds up, 30 years later. When I picked up Odyssey, the first thing I did was figure out how much I could push the limits of the character physics, just like I did when I was 8.

I had the same experience, except that I grabbed Mario Odyssey and...felt incredibly disappointed, decided Nintendo is not for me and went back to my beloved indie games on PC, LOL

Wait until you play Super Mario Wonder!

I do not know... Oddysey felt better. Wonder is rushing you. Always. In odyssey you can just explore some city a bit and there is no pressure. No timer, no nagging. You can just sit on the bench.

Odyssey gives me motion sickness and headaches :(

That is really sad mate. It is really great game. I hope you will be able enjoy it someday.

Ha! I am still using Last.fm 21 years after first discovering it. I would say my current music taste is largely thanks to Last.fm and its compatibility and "Similar Artists" features.
