What intellectual property rights are you asserting? Did you consult with an attorney?

> What intellectual property rights are you asserting?

Not sure I understand the question correctly. As an author of the source code I hold the IP. I'm suing to stop the company from using my code and for compensation for the time they are using it without permission.

> Did you consult with an attorney?

Yes, the case is submitted to the court and awaiting a trial.

I can think of two forms of IP that might apply: copyright and patent. I was curious if either of those formed the basis for your claim, and if so, what your attorney might recommend for capturing evidence for your particular case.

It is covered under copyright. Here in Europe there is no patents for software.

Downvoting also decreases visibility of the statement, effectively silencing the speaker. If I disagree with a statement, why should I be able to prevent you from even considering it? How is this reasonable discourse?

Make plans all you like, and do your best to see them through, but don’t be surprised if God has other plans in store for you as you go through life. Keep an open mind, be willing to adapt under changing circumstances. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Do not carry grudges, but instead, forgive others for their wronging you; your load will be a little lighter this way. Remember that just as you will need help from someone someday, another somebody will need help from you. Pay it forward and give back.

Why do we need AI?

One line of reasoning: China has ~3x as many people as US, so if we want to keep up with them, we'll need 3x our current intellectual manpower. So we need enough AI to make up the difference.

This having been said, there's no substitute for luck. Even Sun-Tzu ( author of "The Art of War"), when discussing whether skill or luck was best, said that he would prefer luck. Problem is, you can't count on luck.

You mention you don’t have a degree and have never had a “real” job, and by giving us your age and asking for life advice, it seems you feel the clock is ticking. I get the sense you’re looking for more than just business advice.

What is important to you? What is your passion? Do you define yourself by your work, or could work just be a thing you do for money to live? Do you want to learn more about something, or experience something? If so, what?

For those interested, the specific breakdown is on this page [1].

I don’t know what good will come of this discussion, unless all countries are willing to discontinue gain-of-function research if this claim is found to be true. However that’s a lot of “ifs” and there is too much opportunity to simply place blame, which won’t help anyone.

It used to be banned here. The ban ended in 2017 https://id.elsevier.com/ACW/?return=https%3A%2F%2Fsecure.jbs...

That link just redirects to thelancet.com.

Actually, I don’t know about you, but now that link redirects to the FBI.GOV :/

This was the original link

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3...

If you Google “lancet ban on gain function” the first link is gone now.

what!? why does that link redirect to fbi.gov??

EDIT: The https://id.elsevier.com redirects to the FBI for me too (Australian ISP).

Obviously because you "hacked" Elsevier by sharing direct links.

I hear you. I’d like a phone that I can plug into a desktop station and use as a desktop computer. Surprised Microsoft didn’t go that route with Windows phone.

They did with Continuum, but Windows phone was already on the way out as they got in the phone market way too late.

I found an article on the subject and the following is an excerpt:

The answer to the question “does the party control a company?” is that it is impossible to tell. In the current environment, fewer foreign governments want to give Beijing the benefit of the doubt. If there was any question as to who was in charge of the economy and business, Xi’s local and overseas critics alike only have to take the Chinese leader at his word, that in private enterprises, as with state-owned firms and every institution in China, the party is the ultimate authority.

I’m not an evolutionary biologist, but I think that the longer an organism’s lifespan is, the slower the rate of reproduction and therefore there will be a slower rate at which the population is capable of evolving. This will put the population at a disadvantage compared to a faster rate of evolving in the event there is environmental pressure.

I think of this as a curve fitting problem: finer granularity of the data points (a shorter lifespan with faster sexual maturation) would more quickly produce a wider variety of genotypes, some of which are more suited to fit to a rapidly changing environment (the curve). On the contrary, rougher granularity of the data (longer lifespan, slower sexual maturation; instead of data points, data line segments trying to fit to the curve) would be more suited to a flatter or gradually shifting curve (a more slowly changing environment).

I think if you have an acute environmental shock, as is happening right now with global warming, the folks who have lots of kids at a younger age will have the genetic advantage from a population perspective (ignoring influences from financial and technological resources).

> But remember, antibody response (whether through infection or through getting vaccinated) is polyclonal: you raise a number of different antibodies that bind in different ways. That’s one of the key features of the adaptive immune system: hitting a new antigen from a number of directions at once. This makes it harder to slip through for a new pathogen variant – which is good, but at the same time, it’s not impossible, either. Thus the attention being paid to these two new strains.
