Right of publicity. Profiting of their image without their permission will get you sued. Even if you use an impersonator. If there is a chance the public will connect it with them, you are probably screwed.

> If Lisp is so good, why isn’t its use more widespread?

The Lisp Curse: http://winestockwebdesign.com/Essays/Lisp_Curse.html

The "Lisp Curse" is a concept suggesting that the power and flexibility of Lisp lead developers to endlessly customize their development environment rather than focusing on building end-user applications. While this notion has some anecdotal merit, implying that Lisp's versatility can sometimes divert focus, it's not a universal truth. Successful Lisp projects exist, and many developers thrive using it productively. The alleged "curse" is more a commentary on the potential for distraction with highly flexible tools, not a definitive outcome.

It's an essay, not an academic paper. The entire "Lisp Curse" essay can basically be counteracted with Big Lebowski's "Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

This seems like a really good explanation. Not sure why it’s being downvoted.

I feel the App Store is one thing differentiating Apple from Android phone manufacturers.

Money from the App Store gets reinvested in the entire iPhone supply chain. Whereas in the case of Android, App Store money goes to Google only.

It also encourages Apple to support their phones long term as its preferred that you stay on your aging iPhone and keep spending at the App Store then risking you leaving the Apple ecosystem because Apple allows their older phones to become obsolete. Android manufacturers on the other hand have every incentive to obsolete your phone ASAP because you buying a new phone is the only way they make money.

Do you seriously believe this? It's Apple that's blocking you from installing any apps or updates when you don't receive iOS Versions Updates anymore, while Google Play doesn't care about it, as long as the app itself is still developed for that version. Also they make more than enough money from the Hardware itself, they just take the profits off the software purchases.

> that's blocking you from installing any apps or updates

Technically that’s the app developers who do that.

Isn't it XCode that blocks you from developing for older versions at some point?

No, Xcode requires you to have an up-to-date MacOS to develop, not iOS.

However, developers are strongly encouraged to raise their apps' minimum iOS versions since Apple does not backport any APIs to older versions, any new thing presented at WWDC is only for the new iOS version. This also applies to bugfixes in some cases (SwiftUI).

So as a developer you either stagnate your knowledge or keep moving forward. Google does backport many APIs, so the issue isn't as problematic on that end.

Doesn't Google sell hardware as well? Would it be better if Android was only available on Pixel phones?

If you resort to violence so will they to protect their property.

If AGI becomes a thing, without political intervention, a lot of people will effectively be left out of the economy.

There are quite a few numbers on the breakeven point but a quick google says it’s usually 2.5x-3x the budget - due to marketing cost and distribution fees.

A quick google says the general consensus is you need 2.5x the budget of the movie to breakeven.

> money isn’t cheap anymore

I know nothing about economics but I wonder if it’s time to ease up on the interest rates. Inflation might not be due to too much money in the system but rather supply simply drying up as China economy circles the drain. Maybe it’s a good idea to let money be cheap again so people could quickly set up alternative non-China suppliers to relieve the supply pressure. But then again I know anything about economics so add salt as required.

The economy is hot. Money is being allocated away from the jobs that powered that last decade’s tech boom; we’re feeling that in Silicon Valley. (It doesn’t help how expensive commodity talent is in the Bay Area. Unless you’re doing AI or something tremendously collaborative, you’ve probably already built the systems that enable your team to phone in from anywhere.)

If money is being allocated away from tech, where is it going to?

> This line of thought leads people to naturally adopt the exact same sort optimization (exploitation) strategies businesses (your employer) does with the same justifications they use.

But that’s exactly the kind of relationship it is. Instead of maintaining some fantasy, you should call a duck, a duck.

There are 2 versions of the PS5: base and digital. The base version comes with a Blu-ray drive that can play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.

The "base" one didn't exist when the console first released, there was only digital. The "base" version bundles the disc drive that is normally purchased separately.

They launched with one with a built-in disc drive and one without. For their mid-cycle refresh they changed it to a single model with a disc drive add-on but sell a SKU that includes the drive in the box.

That is incorrect. The PS5 disc version was available at launch. The recent refresh has an optional disc accessory.

I think he can’t STFU. He needs constant public validation and praise. Frankly, I think he never will. 20 years from now, if he is still alive and wealthy, we will still be hearing from him - long after his peers have gone into quiet retirements.
