Some Apple Apps can bypass Little Snitch though.

That was fixed long ago.

work with virtual machines shows: not all traffic may be intercepted by little snitch

I'm a big fan of carplay, but I'm not sure I want whatever this is.

Some better integrations, sure. I can see wanting the carplay maps able to know the charge of the battery/fuel levels to plan out trips that include chargers/gas stations on the way.

But, taking over the entire dash? Nah, let's not overcomplicate things too much.

100% this. I want exactly none of this new CarPlay. Car and phone integration has been notoriously bad since the beginning. Software updates on your phone break BT or CarPlay with some specific car or brand… or car entertainment software being buggy and not working well with a phone… and never getting updates. CarPlay is mostly good at what it is today. I certainly don’t want it to became more integrated into my car. I really hope the “full dash takeover” is just an option that can be switched off.

This is mostly a direct response to automakers removing CarPlay entirely so that they can own the end to end experience. Now these automakers such as GM won’t be able to justify doing so as improving the user experience.

So even if you never use this feature, you should still want it, because it’s the feature that is meant to keep CarPlay relevant

They announced this 3 years ago before car makers started removing it.

Maybe, but do you think they would have bothered doing this if automakers weren’t putting up hurdles in negotiations around CarPlay support? Writing on the wall for this was long before the announcements

I'd really like a better idea on Windows support for mise. Especially for development using WSL. It seems like it probably works there, but the docs are pretty slim.

> Note that Windows support is very minimal for now.

I have zero interest in the CarPlay v2 (as described in the article).

CarPlay v1, however, is an absolute requirement. It works great and gives me pretty much everything I want.

I’m curious, but honestly I don’t see any automaker ever playing along.

I don’t know man. Never underestimate Apple’s marketing. If it’s a good implementation, all they would need is 1 automaker to do it the others will have to. I wouldn’t consider a new car without AA/CarPlay and many others are in the same boat. Automakers had to start offering upgrades to their old cars to support AA/CarPlay. There is no way automakers could invest as much into software development as Apple or Google. I hear people like their Tesla infotainment systems, but I don’t have a Tesla nor plan on buying one. Also don’t see how they could match the AppStore/Play Store.

I won’t buy without CarPlay either.

But if Android Automotive runs CarPlay, I’m not sure how much I care. And I’m a huge fanboy.

I’d like to be able to use Siri to control the temperature and a few other things. And taking over the whole screen could be nice.

But Apple is such a control freak about things I have a hard time seeing most car makers agree to it. And just about every industry Apple has touched has learned the lesson that Apple takes things over. Car makers clearly already dislike the fact that CarPlay is so popular, I don’t think they want to give Apple MORE leverage.

I find the idea of Android taking over the industry a problem (monoculture = bad, manufacturers are clearly not up to it themselves). Apple could be a hedge. But they’re not a play nice company even when they should be.

They haven’t learned humility again after losing it during iPod/iPhone rise.

Soo, your dell laptop died, and you decided to checkout how far away an Apple Store was? That's a very odd thing to do.

Apple Stores aren't the only way that Apple offers support, it's one of many. Just because it didn't happen to be convenient for one of your scenarios doesn't mean it's not convenient for thousands of others.

Also, from what I can tell, Onsite warranty support is a paid upgrade for Dells, not a default. I could be wrong on that, though, haven't bought a dell in a while. Apple does also support onsite warranty support for some computers if you pay more as well. So I'm really not sure what the point of your comment is.

Since I am comparing the two, it's not odd in the slightest. You're just trying to "gotcha" me without responding to the substance of my claim. To reiterate, making customers drive to an Apple store that is probably a fair distance away is substandard service. Having a repair technician come to you is the standard by which Apple's service should be judged. If Dell can do it, so could Apple. (I never buy upgraded service contracts, the Dell service was standard.)

And again, 30 minute bus ride to get to the Apple store in Seattle of all places. There is no Apple store in downtown Seattle. Apple Stores are a bad joke.

No, this is for the Mac.

They seem to be teasing the Apple VR as well for later, but this is "all about the Mac"

Quinn the Eskimo and Eric Schlegel, you get an answer from them you know it's gold.
